Turku Day

Turku Day, which brings together Turku residents and friends of Turku, is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of September. The tradition, started by Turkuseura and later continued by the City of Turku, began in 1961. In 2025, Turku Day consisted of over 90 events.

The Godchild Tradition of the City of Turku

According to a tradition that began in 1973, the first baby born in Turku on Turku Day becomes the city’s godchild. The only exception was in 1979, when no babies were born on Turku Day. Since the mid-1990s, godchildren have been invited annually to a joint birthday coffee event, which has been held, among other places, at the main library and at the Juhana Herttua café in Turku Castle.
